Welcome to our second grade pond!

I would like to welcome everyone back for a great school year.  Below are some procedures and routines that will be going on in our classroom.

Behavior Management Plan and Consequences

Every student starts each day with 4 fish in their net.   When a student breaks a classroom rule and/or is disruptive in class, they can lose a fish.

First fish- Warning

Second fish- walk 5 minutes at recess

Third fish- walk 8 minutes at recess, write 10 sentences about behavior to be signed by parent

Fourth fish- walk all of recess, write 15 sentences about behavior to be signed by parent

*Severe Clause: If a student’s behavior is disruptive to the learning of others, he/she can immediately be removed from the classroom to visit the principal.

Classroom Rules

  1. Keep hands, feet, objects, and all unkind words to yourself.
  2. Listen to others when they are talking.
  3. Stay in your seat when the teacher is out of the room.
  4. Always try your best!

Rewards

*If a student keeps their fish all day, their name is put in a drawing.  Two names will be drawn each day to get to pick from the prize bucket.

*F.R.O.G. (For Reaching Our Goal)

As a class, they can earn marbles.  If the class goes all day without anyone losing a fish, the class earns a marble.  If the class receives a compliment about their behavior from another teacher, they can also earn a marble.  Once they reach 30 marbles, they earn a F.R.O.G. party.

Parent/Teacher Contact

*Each student will have a planner that they will take home every night.  Here is where they will write the homework for the night or any important information from the day.  This is also where I will write any notes to you and if your child lost any fish for the day.  Each night I ask that one parent initial the planner so I know that you saw your child’s homework for the night and any notes about the day.  If you have any questions or concerns, you can use this as communication back to me or write me a separate note.

*Also in their planners will be the spelling list for the week.  This way you can study with your child throughout the week so they are prepared for Friday’s test.

*Each student will have a homework folder and a take home folder for graded work, along with a St. Edward folder for notes from the office or me.

AR (Accelerated Reader)

The AR program is a way to encourage students to read more books at their ability and level, and it helps me to check their comprehension.  The way the program works is that the student reads a book and then takes a test.  There are books available to them in our classroom library and school library.  The test consists of comprehension and detail questions.  Each book is worth so many points and if the student passes the test they get all of the points or if they miss one or two questions they get partial points.  Most of the second grade books are .5 points, some of the chapter books are worth 1 point.  Every time your child takes a test, I will send home the results.  Each grading period the students will have an AR goal to achieve that is based on their abilities.  At the end of each grading period there will be an AR party for those who achieved their goal.  This program is not for a grade, but to encourage students to read more.

Snack

Mid-morning I pass out a snack to tie over the hungry stomachs until lunch time.  So if everyone could please send a box of some kind of cracker that would be great.

If you ever have questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.  I look forward to a great school year!
